His mommy told me that his name came to her in a dream – I love it! he was so easy to photograph, just a happy content little guy.

This was my first time using this new prop and I didn’t make the hole in the center big enough. Only I didn’t realize it until I was trying to cram him into it.

And this is my little secret – When babies first arrive for their session and are extracted from their car seats they are almost always wide awake – So I take some awake shots before encouraging them to go to sleep. These awake images are almost always the parents favorites but are rarely mine, however, in this one I just love how the caramel colored fur converted to black and white. I must remember to take some photographs of Simon on it.

Look at this mess!

July 30, 2009

That’s what Simon said to me when I walked out into the living room to find him spreading his watermelon all over the couch. It’s a phrase I have said many many times (apparently)  – I didn’t realize how frequently I said it but Simon has recently become our little parrot and we are hearing all sorts of things from him that we regularly say. At least leather cleans up easy – that’s why we bought them.

More from our fantastic little mess maker soon…

I don’t often do newborn sessions on location anymore but every once in awhile it’s nice to shake up the routine and and get the creative juices flowing.  I think it was extra special for this family to have a photo session take place in their home as they had just spent the last 2 weeks on an extended stay in the NICU. I am sure it is just a great feeling to have their baby at home with them now. And here she is, the beautiful Sophie…

This hat was her Grandmother’s christening hat and then her mother’s christening hat and now it will be hers – a true family heir loom – how cool is that?

until next time!

This is a baby I photographed, not my Myles. I thought I should add that disclaimer lest anyone be confused : ) It turns out that Myles is quite the trendy baby name right now.

Update on Baby Owen

July 25, 2009

untitled-1

I just wanted to thank everyone for their prayers for baby Owen. God has answered them in a BIG way! Last week when I photographed Owen at Children’s Hospital the prognosis was not good – at birth Owen was deprived of oxygen for a long time and was not expected to live, at least not without severe brain damage. However, this little baby has stumped the medical experts. Owen had a structural MRI and there are no dead spots in his brain (which his Doctors were expecting to see) and the blood flow to his brain is good. The MRI images looked like the brain of a healthy baby. Owen’s survival is now expected to be 99%. This is nothing short of a miracle. His family is still awaiting the results of an impulse MRI which will provide more information about his brain function. Please continue to pray for Owen, that God would continue to heal his brain.

Thank you!

This morning I had the honor of photographing the birth of fellow photographer Jessica Peterson’s son Waldron Dain. Jessica had the beautiful home birth that she really wanted but Wally was a little impatient and made his entrance before the midwife arrived. Luckily a student midwife got to the house just as Jess was pushing him out and assisted with getting him started but Jessica basically did it all herself including catching. Women are incredibly  strong and beautiful!  Here is a little sneak peek at beautiful Wally. dsc_4926

This experience has just about sold me on home birth – seriously, they had the best food. It was like a bakery at that house. While I was there Jess’s friends and support team made artisan bread (which we ate with brie), banana bread, and the world’s best chocolate chip cookies. Wally was out before any of this was done but that didn’t keep me from sticking around to eat -there are some perks to this job : )

More from Wally’s birth coming soon!

Happy Birthday Myles

July 21, 2009

Today was Myles’s 29th birthday. We had a small family celebration in our back yard – it was totally a surprise to Myles.  He is such a sweet husband and a good father it was fun to celebrate his first 29 years.

Simon was thinking about getting in on that cake action. We had Myles’s two favorite desserts; German chocolate cake and grasshopper pie.Happy Birthday sweetie!

What’s all that white stuff behind him ? – well that’s our insulation from the crawl space. It seems that a family of opossums has decided to make their home under our house. One of them recently died and really really stunk up the house. Myles, tried to deal with the problem on Sunday only to discover the giant nest they have made down there. When a live opossum fell out of the insulation and nearly landed on his head he decided he had had enough and that this was a job best left to the professionals.  I spent Monday morning on the phone trying to find someone who could take care of our opossum infestation only to be referred from one company to another. It seems that Opossums are considered “wildlife” and in the state of WA you have to have a special license to trap and remove them. I finally found someone who came out to the house and dug around in the insulation in the crawl space until he found the decaying opossum carcass that was stinking up the entire house,  he removed it for a mere $75. I don’t think this company understands their negotiating position because I would have paid just about anything to have that stink gone and there was no way I was crawling under the house 75 bucks seems like a bargain.  Unfortunately the dead animal was an adolescent which means that most likely there is a mother opossum and more babies (up to 13) around. Obviously Myles saw one of them.  So we have some live traps set and I get to check them every morning. If I find one I will be sure and post a photo :)

Birth Photography is an amazing adrenaline rush – it’s nothing short of miraculous to watch a little person join this world. This is just a quick sneak peek for his Mama – I will share more from this incredible birth later.
