Talia {day 4}

Just one photo today, our Session was not the productive, not because of Talia but Simon who wants to snuggle and be in the photos now whenever he sees me head for my bean bag with Talia. I have to work while he is out or asleep. However, I did get a really great shot of them together today but I am saving that one for the birth announcement.

So here she is 4 days old, getting fatter and fatter.

A few notes on her name – Talia Sabine. Talia is a Hebrew name and means dew from God. it’s pronounced like Tal-ya it rhymes with Dahlia  (with the American pronunciation of Dahlia). You can hear it prnounced here.  A lot of people have asked where it came from. The truth is not all the exciting… Talia was a name we considered when we were pregnant with Simon. My all time favorite baby name book is The Baby Name Wizard by Laura Wattenberg. This name book is completely different from any other name book out there in that is shows the popularity graph for each name and it list likely brother and sister names for each entry. (Incidentally Laura now has a website that has a lot of the same useful information and tools.)  At the time we were considering the name Asher for a boy (which we eventually ruled out deciding that it was becoming too popular) in the book Asher is listed as a possible sibling name for Talia and that was where I first heard of the name and fell in love with it. Of course we had a boy and named him Simon but kept Talia on our possible future baby name list.

I first heard of the name Sabine (pronounced sa-BEEN) from the Griffin and Sabine books by Nick Bantock. They are great books and you should check them out if you haven’t ever read them. However, it was Myles that suggested the name Sabine as a middle name for Talia and he has never read the Griffin and Sabine books. I don’t know where he first hear the name but he really likes the history of St. Sabina. Sabine is the french form of Sabina. Obviously with the last name Brown we wanted to use first names that were not overly common. So there you have it the story of her name : )

  1. sabine was my name in french class!

  2. I think “because we liked it” is the best reason. Talia is one of the girl’s names I’ve always loved.
    My mother is still trying to find the hidden meaning in Moira’s name, which is funny because the way they picked my name was the “I like this one” method.

    oh good. I was just about to ask how you pronounce it. And I LOVE the name Sabine, even before I fell in love with those books!

    Cool background info on her name. I was wondering about it too. Both are very pretty names. 🙂

    Emily, you know I love you, and you know I’m enamored of your lovely bundle of joy. I think it’s cool that you chose a Hebrew name… did you know that a Hebrew name would have penultimate stress? Additionally, I simultaneously believe that you can pronounce a name however you want… I just think it would have been more accurate to say “we’re pronouncing it…” or “we’re using the American pronunciation of…” I hope this doesn’t cause any tension, and I’m sure you know that Talia will get tons of love from me… Happy 4 days old, and congrats on a great birth!

  6. Congratulations!!
    (I’m a long time lurker here.)
    I love both of the names you picked. Talia is a favourite of mine, and I taught a little girl called Sabine last year… but until then, had never heard the name before. And haven’t since, until now. Gorgeous names.
