Life is a daring adventure or nothing…

to keep our faces toward change and behave like free spirits in the presence of fate is strength undefeatable.” – Helen Keller

Brent M. Sweet

My heart goes out to the Sweet family who is grieving the loss of their son, brother, nephew and friend. I met with them last Tuesday down at Golden Gardens. They are a wonderful family and it is unsettling that I met them under such sad circumstances. In a different place and time I can see that we would have easily become friends.

I have been receiving quite a few request for an update, I am not privy to any special information but I will share what I do know.

On Sunday a memorial for Brent Sweet was held at the Camp May Amphitheater in Los Alamos New Mexico. Los Alamos Monitor ran the following about Brent.

“Brent Sweet, cherished and loved by many;
is presumed passed away in a swimming tragedy in the Puget Sound of
Seattle Washington.  After finishing his spring semester at the
University of Montana he embarked on a soul search to strengthen his
spiritual relationship with God, and focus his life on helping the less
fortunate people he encountered.  In May he packed up his truck with
his camping and climbing gear and unicycle and went for this selfless
search of freedom.

Brent has a deep love and passion for outdoor adventure and
being with Nature.  He is found most happy exploring, camping, rock
climbing, backpacking, and skiing.  Irregardless of the hardships laid
upon Brent, he always remained optimistic, courageous and at peace. His
other life passions are his unicycle which he would ride long distances
on trails, and his music that he would often share in a street setting.
Brent recently found his inner voice and expressed his thoughts and
experiences through writing journals and poetry.  He was also working
on a novel to share his life with everyone.”

I wish that I cold have attended the memorial as I am sure that it was a beautiful celebration of his life. The Sweet family was able to meet with Michael Hobbs (the swimmer pulled from the water) and retrieve Brent’s journals. Brent was a prolific writer and retrieving the journals was very important to them so I am thankful that there were able to at least get that little bit of closure.

As of today the papers are reporting that a body was found at Shilshole Marina over the weekend. It is possible that this is Brent’s body and I am praying that this is the case so that the Sweets can have this last bit of closure. Please keep the Sweet family in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.

  1. Any cause of death is unfortunate, but ones like this? Just so sad. Thank you for giving an update…even if the ending was horrible.
